Great selections! I love the Vaccinium in the fall….oh those bright reds!
Thank you. I love the color of blueberries and their kin in the fall also – really amazing. I need to get some photos of them.
I think if they weren’t edible, blueberries would be valued as an ornamental rather than usually ignored for that use.
[…] Fall Color isn’t Just for Trees: Shrubs with Fall Leaf Color « SC Gardener scgardener.wordpress.com/2009/10/26/fall-color-isnt-just-for-trees-shrubs-with-fall-leaf-color (trimmed for listing most text on page)
Hello,
I love the BigLeaf Hydrangea. It is so beautiful. We cannot grow it here. Shrubs with fall foliage that do grow here are Nandina (Heavenly Bamboo) & Photinia.
Thank you for showing that fall color is just not for the trees 🙂
I’ve rarely seen Hydrangea macrophylla put on that kind of color change, but when they do! I’m trying to pull together some photos of perennials with fall color too.
We’re shoulder deep in nandinas and photinias here – hard to get worked up about them. The nandinas are starting to be invasive in SC – probably not a problem in AZ. Photinias here are subject to a devastating disease – Entomosporium leaf spot – that is killing them off in many areas. Probably also avoided in AZs dry climate?
My all time favorite is Acer palmatum – it can grow both as a small tree or as a shrub. It has beautiful colour all year, but in autumn is just amazing!
They really are gorgeous. I have one of the dissectum types (unknown cultivar, came with the house.) It’s just starting to turn, but puts on a great show every year.
You are right, we tend to only think of trees as changing, but just today I was noticing all the red in the burning bushes around my neighborhood. I think they are my favorite.
Burning bush really are extraordinary, practically fluorescent red at peak. Sadly, they’re becoming invasive in the southeast, so I don’t encourage them down here.
I totally agree fall is not just for trees. Shrubs are some of my favorite plants. For the first time I’ve noticed the great color on the itea. I love that fothergilla too.
Iteas are great. That cultivar is a particular favorite of mine. Here’s an article you might like on Virginia Sweetspire: http://www.clemson.edu/extension/hgic/plants/landscape/shrubs/hgic1080.html
Yes, scgardener, it was your super photo that led to my Zenobia blog post. Many thanks.
You are right about all the shrubs with great fall color. You have some very pretty ones!
Thank you.
Very great article! Truely..
